Hi, I’m Denise! Before becoming an Art Therapist, I provided parent support at a community outreach centre for 5 years. I also spent some time as a developmental interventionist with the Nova Scotia Early Childhood Developmental Intervention Services where I worked with children under the age 5 and their families to enhance skills and daily function. I hold a Master of Arts in Child and Youth Study, and am a Registered Counselling Therapist (Candidate) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. I also hold professional membership with the Canadian Art Therapy Association.
As an art therapist, I help children regulate their emotions and navigate big feelings through creative expression. By using colours, shapes, and textures, children can externalize their inner experiences in a non-verbal manner, gaining a sense of control over their emotions. Through artwork, children can develop coping strategies and self-awareness, while the art therapist uses the art as a tool for reflection and dialogue, supporting emotional regulation and overall well-being.
As an art therapist, I tailor each session to the unique needs of every child I work with. My approach combines child-centered and directive play therapy techniques, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed therapy, sand tray therapy, narrative therapy, and traditional talk therapy. This blend fosters a safe space for creative expression, guiding children towards healing and growth.
Outside of my work, I spend my time with my three young children – and making artwork, of course.
